Your right to a
Good Faith Estimate.
You can receive a written estimate of expected health care charges when you are uninsured or are choosing not to use your health coverage.
Understand expected costs.
You may request an estimate before scheduling. It should describe the expected costs of the planned health care items and services. The estimate is specific to the provider or facility issuing it.
When to expect your estimate
- If you schedule care 3–9 business days ahead, the written estimate is due within 1 business day after scheduling.
- If you schedule care at least 10 business days ahead, it is due within 3 business days after scheduling.
- If you request an estimate before scheduling, it is due within 3 business days after your request.
Keep a copy.
Save your estimate so you can compare it with your bill. If a provider or facility bills you at least $400 more than its estimate, you may use the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.
